I’m often asked, what size backdrop should I get? Well, that depends on a few factors. Many people begin by determining if they want head-shot, waist up, or full body frame shot, and then narrow down the size needed.

If you are using a backdrop stand or photo booth, chances are you are standing close to your backdrop. But if you are using a backdrop against a wall, you may be several feet from your backdrop or practically touching the wall.

You may be behind a desk or standing in front of a couch or bed, and several feet from your backdrop. Then determining the size of backdrop needed gets complicated.

The two key determinations in choosing appropriate size backdrop are how close will you be to your backdrop and how much of you do you want to be framed.

The closer you are to the backdrop, the less backdrop you need.

What I suggest before guessing at the size you need, stand or sit where you will be shooting and place your camera in position to shoot you. You will need to guess where the camera will frame you relevant to the area on the wall. Place masking tape where you think it will frame you and look through the viewfinder. Adjust the masking tape as needed until you are framed in as desired. Now you will know what size backdrop you will need.
